Coastal Roots Farm Children’s Area

441 Saxony Road, Encinitas, CA 92024
Status: In progress

Rooted In Place worked closely with Coastal Roots farm staff and educators to vision upgrades to the educational farm which included a new barn, nature play area, outdoor classroom space, educational kitchen and a children’s farm and play area. Rooted In Place facilitated several organizational and community workshops to help generate concepts for the children’s farm and its integration into the rest of the site.

The final design was a schematic level site plan for two children’s areas — a tot lot for children 0-3 years old and a learning farm for older children. The design integrates views of the existing working farm, takes advantage of the elevation changes by incorporating amphitheater seating, and engages the children in the opportunity to make play as an urban farmer by growing veggies and selling them at a little farm stand.

Water play, nature play, sensory paths and areas for rest are integrated into the tot lot. Parents in this area, can relax on the rocking chairs while overlooking any events that may be occurring on the adjacent green.

Rooted In Place looks forward to continue working with Coastal Roots Farm to fine tune details as they get closer to integrating and further developing the concepts for these two children’s areas.
